Caddick Construction Hands Over New Extra Care Facility In Wigan

Building work has reached completion on Wigan Council’s new £11.7m Sandalwood Extra Care as main contractor, Caddick Construction, hands over the flagship mixed-residential development.

To mark completion of the flagship scheme, the Caddick Construction team recently welcomed the Leader and Deputy Leader of Wigan Council, David Molyneux and Keith Cunliffe, Cllr Rehmen and Cllr Gambles for a site visit following the official handover.

The new-build scheme provides borough residents aged 55 and over the opportunity to live independently, with the reassurance of specialist support on-site. The scheme is part funded via Homes England, through the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Responding to the borough’s housing needs, Sandalwood Extra Care includes 48 one-bedroom apartments, three two-bedroom apartments, a guest bedroom, lounges, games room, library, kitchen as well as extensive gardens and terraces. The development also incorporates 18 new-build bungalows.

Available for affordable rent, all homes have been built to high environmental standards. Using ground source heat pump technology, the properties will benefit from low carbon heating systems, helping residents to keep energy bills as low as possible. In addition electric vehicle charging points, solar panels and underfloor heating will also be in use.

As construction came to a close in June 2023, the facility has now been handed over to the operator with the first residents moving in imminently.

Throughout the build, just under 20 new local jobs were created by Caddick and 11 apprentices were facilitated on-site. With four of Caddick’s apprentices studying at Wigan College, the team also joined learners at the local college for educational workshops. Elsewhere, a total of £15k was donated to regional charities, with Caddick also becoming a Gold Patron of Wigan Youth Zone.

Paul Dodsworth, Managing Director of Caddick Construction Group commented: “Extra care facilities such as these are a vital necessity to any community so we’re pleased to have brought this much needed development to life on behalf of Wigan Council. Throughout this build we’ve enlisted a high quality and local supply chain, which has complemented our team’s residential expertise, leading to us being recognised with the Quality Recognition Award from Premier Guarantee for our work at Sandalwood Extra Care.”

Caddick’s North West team includes more than 100 members of staff and operates from offices in Warrington and Kendal. The team has delivered a range of construction projects in the healthcare sector, including the delivery of both Milnrow & Newhey Medical Centre and Carlisle Healthcare Centre, on behalf of United Healthcare Developments. These schemes saw the creation of two BREEAM Outstanding facilities, incorporating the highest quality construction and sustainable methods of practice, making them the most sustainable primary care centres in the UK.
